SCPC runs four competitions each year (from 2005), the results of which are published on the Honours page. Click on the relevant heading to find the details of this year's competition.
This is an internal club competition in the format of a sort of organised melee, consisting of five rounds of games in which the teams are changed in a pre-arranged way for each game so that, as far as possible, people do not play WITH the same players more than once, nor AGAINST the same players more than twice. Not always achievable, but we try! It is played as either a triples or doubles event, depending on the number of entries. Everyone takes the score of their team from each game and the winner is decided in the usual way (games won, points difference, points won). The only prize is to hold for the following year the cup presented to our club by our twinned club in Bernay, and entry is free. Normally played on May Day Bank Holiday Monday from 10.00 am.
These are internal club knockout competitions, randomly drawn, except that if byes are required because of the number of entries, the previous year's winner and, if necessary, runner-up are given them. Each match is the best of three games, arranged at a time to suit both teams. The aim, virtually never achieved to date, is to complete the preliminary rounds in time for a finals day on a sunny September Sunday, when the semi-finals and finals of both competitions are played. Maybe this year? Prizes are usually engraved glasses for finalists, plus holding the "Holt & Haskell" Cup for the year for the singles champion and the "Goodfirst Challenge Cup" for the doubles champions, and entry is free.
This a triples event open to anyone who responds to invitations sent to all Southern Region clubs, in theory limited (due to the size of the terrain) to the first 30 entrants but, unfortunately, as with so many other events in the Region, we have never had to turn any teams in excess of that number away. Usually run as a five-game "snake", although we would quite like to do morning leagues and afternoon knockout if the number of entries justified that. Normally played on the Sunday in June before the start of Wimbledon which, in recent years, has coincided with the Kite Festival at Lord's Hill. Entry fees are the same as for most other local competitions (about £3.50/adult, juniors free) and prizes usually consist of wine to the value of the entry fees less our admin costs, plus the "Paul Slater Trophy" for the winners.
New for 2005, the Ron Luxton Trophy is a "drawn doubles" event - those wanting to take part should say so on the previous Tuesday, and the pairings will be drawn, not "self-selected" as with the Club Doubles Championship, with each pair playing five games on a system to be decided, with the winners receiving the Trophy donated by our first Honorary Life Member, Ron Luxton. The Inaugural event took place at Lord's Hill on Sunday 17th April, starting at 10.00am.
