Singles & Doubles Championships (Last Update 09/11/2011)

The draw for this year's Championships was made by Jill on Sunday March 6th at the melee.

The Doubles Final and Singles Semi-Finals and Finals were held on Sunday 6th November, starting at 10.30a.m.

Amazingly, the weather defied the forecast, and this year's finals were played out under sunshine that was warm it you stayed out of the rather chilly wind. A good crowd of loyal supporters watched some interesting matches with lots of good play plus occasional lapses, some very costly (wasn't it, Trenty?!). The new presentation, below, of the draw and full match results has been developed to enable update directly from an Android phone, so by-passing the problems that have interrupted update of the website for large parts of this season. In theory, this will enable anyone with an Android phone (with permission from me that has to be built into the application) to update relevant tables - please discuss with me if you are interested. I shall be rolling this out over most of the "active" parts of the club website between now and the start of next season, so the site should be more dynamic and up-to-date than it has been this season

Singles (New feature!)

The possibility of an "all-girl" final this year, for the first time in club history, was cruelly dashed as first Trenty beat Kaylee 13-2, 13-4, and then David overcame Hilary 13-8, 13-4. Kaylee seemed a bit blown off course by Trenty's usual rapid-fire play, which reminds us that an important part of how you play this wonderful game of ours is to try to play your own game in your own way and your own time, and particularly try not to let your opponent's style of play distract you from your own. For Hilary, it seemed almost to be "one step too far" after impressive wins in the previous rounds against Graham, Mavis and Sam, and it prevented her from a shot at adding to her 2002 victory, as well as meaning that David had stopped her attempts to win both the Singles and the Bernay Cup.

The final was a see-saw affair, with Trenty dashing out into a lead in (I think) all three games in his usual unique way, and then getting hauled back in by some good play by David, although not quite quickly enough in game 2 to prevent the need for the third, decisive game. The critical point in that last game came when Trenty chose a bizarre shot with his last boule when already holding the point, and completely wrecked the position, allowing David to capitalise with a "full house" of 3, changing what might have been a 9-4 lead to Trenty into a 7-7 tie, from which David never looked back. As Trenty said afterwards, lack of recent match practice no doubt contributed to the loss of concentration that allowed him to select his fatal shot. The final score was 13-6, 4-13, 13-7 to David, so he retained his Singles title and added it to his victory in the Bernay Cup.

Doubles (New feature!)

The Doubles final pitted last year's runners-up and 2009 winners, David and Wayne, against the new, youthful pairing of Kaylee and Aaron. It seemed that perhaps, as in last year's Doubles final, the emotional effort for David in winning the Singles title drew a bit too much from his resources, as he didn't seem to be able to retain quite the same level of intensity throughout the match as he had displayed in the morning singles. Possibly also the temperature drop as the sun went down may have contributed, as concentration is notoriously difficult to sustain when you get cold. Whatever it was, the first two games were shared, with Kaylee and Aaron taking the first fairly comfortably, but David and Wayne reversing that, with interest, in the second. In a shrewd tactical move at the start of the third game, Kaylee swapped from shooting to pointing, while Aaron took over shooting duties. Both of them performed better in the new roles than they had in their old ones in the previous game, and they eventually ran out as fairly comfortable winners, putting two new and very welcome names on the trophy. The final score was 13-6, 4-13, 13-7. The Doubles title, plus making the semis in the Singles, caps a season of remarkable performances by Kaylee, although she doesn't quite become the youngest-ever club title winner, as Andy won the Bernay Cup in 1987 when he was 12 years old, and both the Singles and Doubles two years later (see Honours board).
